78.7% of McGill students vote to adopt the Policy Against Genocide in Palestine, amassing the largest turnout in SSMU Referendum history

The Policy Against Genocide in Palestine demands that our university publicly condemn the genocidal campaign and siege against the people of Gaza at the hands of the Zionist regime. It demands that our university immediately cut ties with, and divest from corporations, institutions, and donors complicit in genocide, settler-colonialism, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.

We are overwhelmed to see the McGill student body show such strong support for the Palestinian struggle in this historic moment. Our fellow students’ resounding endorsement of this urgent policy sends a clear message to the administration that the student body will no longer tolerate our University’s remorseless complicity in the occupation of Palestine and the destruction of its people.

McGill students have demonstrated that we will remain steadfast in advancing the Palestinian struggle for liberation, despite intimidation and repression. We rejoice in our community’s resilience and unwavering solidarity with Palestine, and urge you all to continue championing the Palestinian cause with passion and tenacity, as our people have done for the past 75 years.

The passing of the Policy is not a victory in itself, but rather a victorious step towards ending McGill’s complicity in genocide and settler-colonialism in Palestine. Our end goal is — and always will be — complete liberation.

The McGill administration tried, and failed to block this Policy before the referendum vote even began. This administration will now — once again — do everything in its power to overturn the referendum result, in a desperate attempt to crush students’ unequivocal support for Palestinian liberation.

Our elected representatives in SSMU must ensure that the demands of their constituents are met. As our student union, the SSMU has the duty to resist threats from the McGill administration and defend the democratic decision of its students, following the largest show of support for a policy in SSMU history.
